71

71 was a very strange number. It holds no significance directly or in directly to me or my family but it showed itself during a beach walk. I discovered this shell before generating the number and considered faking the number generation so I could use it. I had a second thought and decided to collect the shell and keep it in preparation for when 71 appears as the number which would happen eventually.

The next day was number generation day; I clicked on the Random Number Generator, entered the digits 0 - 500 and clicked generate… 71. Really? I took a screen shot to prove it as I could not believe it myself.

So I thought, maybe it's a sign, a higher meaning like the TV series Lost. I'll start seeing 71 in the froth on my coffee or the bristles of my toothbrush, I'll sit in seat 71 on the number 71 bus. Or maybe it's just a happy coincidence.

New number

It's new number time again. This week it's 34. What will emerge this time?

Zero

This was so hard, for me there is never nothing, there is always something. However the tension of these stitches revealed a hole, a little void, a little bit of nothing and I kinda like it.

0

0, O, o, nothing, nada, zero. Is there really ever nothing? I believe there is always something, even nothing is something, space will fill a void, space is something even if it is technically nothing. Confused? I am, it's like the chicken and the egg issue!

So how do I show 0? I thought long and hard about it, it always led me back to the element of subtraction, removal, taking away. I am one of those people that can not leave a beach or other natural area without claiming a piece for myself, resulting in jars and boxes full of shell, pebble, and driftwood fragments, pinecones and other such treasures. They look beautiful perched on mantel pieces and sitting by the fire, even so, they have no purpose other than to remind me of the claim I made the day they were removed from their environment. I know I am not alone in this commandeering of nature nonetheless if we continue, will nature eventually stop filling the voids we leave behind?
